Launching our Booklet - About the Brain: Autism and Eating Disorders

We are delighted to launch our About the Brain Booklet!

What is it?

Our About the Brain Booklet was developed as part of a collaboration with PEACE. This booklet aims to cover:

  • What neuroimaging techniques are
  • Why neuroimaging techniques and brain imaging research are important
  • What the research says about brain differences seen in Autistic people and in eating disorders
  • Why these research findings are important

The booklet also aims to provide a quick "snapshot" of information on brain differences seen in Autistic relative to neurotypical people, as well as the impact an eating disorder may have on the brain. We hope to inform members of the lived experience community, researchers, clinicians and carers on the benefits and interesting findings that neuroimaging research are able to provide.

How was it developed?

The booklet was developed over a two-week period, in which EDAC's neuroimaging-based team member travelled to King's College London to work on brain imaging data with the PEACE lab. A conversation was had about how while findings on brain imaging research can be really interesting, they are often not developed with a non-research audience in mind! Thus, this booklet hopes to avoid providing an overly-technical explanation of brain imaging research in this field, and also explore some examples on how this research may apply to an individual's day-to-day life.

How do you use it?

This booklet is designed to be used by everyone! This includes:

  • Members of the lived experience community reading the booklet in their own time
  • Researchers who are not in the field of brain imaging looking to obtain some background knowledge
  • Clinicians who are working with Autistic people struggling with an eating disorder
  • Carers who want to know more about their loved one
  • Members of the public, who simply want to learn more about brain imaging research in Autistic people and in eating disorders.
